GameXplain: Paper Mario: Sticker Star - Video Review
Am I to understand that they have gutted Paper Mario of its signature unique lovable characters and most of its RPG elements in favor of making the core of the experience solving puzzles that all involve finding things and sticking them other places like some early 90’s point and click adventure but with less story?
I know I’m going to sound like a certain Paper Mario character myself complaining about games I’ve never played, but there is no indication that anything I enjoyed about Mario RPGs is anywhere in this game, and they have made every effort to sell the idea that the focus of this game is something stupid and uninteresting.
I need to revisit Super Paper Mario, I initially was so put off by the controls that I didn’t let myself appreciate everything else, I kept looking at it like a Mario platformer.
You’d think that a 2D platformer starring Super Mario would have some sort of set standards for it’s basic movement physics, but oddly enough the game controls as if you were still just traveling in an RPG, despite its new-found emphasis on action for a PM game. Mario’s got no inertia, no natural buildup of speed, no little slide when you stop, no fun physical moves at all. It almost feels like some Mario Flash fan game at some points, or a parody of a Mario game.
Other than that, I suppose it’s a fantastic game. Perfectly competes with other Mario RPGs in terms of story, writing, and the overall adventure
